Organize! What the Artists’ Union & the American Artists’ Congress Can Teach Us Today
Lampert (Justseeds Artists' Cooperative) will provide an overview of the Artists' Union and the American Artists' Congress, two leading voices for radical artists during the 1930s. Both organizations responded to the Great Depression and the rise of fascism with collective action, purposefully aligning themselves with working class labor movements. The lecture will segue into an open discussion about how artists are addressing the present-day economic crisis.
Presented in conjunction with Art Work: A National Conversation About Art, Labor and Economics by Temporary Services and collaborators, on view at Gallery 400 until March 6.
