Bucky’s objective was construct a sustainable household item from found materials. Bucky’s cages are constructed of 102 tubes that formerly housed 102 glow sticks (part of the packaging they came in), nearly 100 wire dry-cleaning hangers, the inside wire from old telephone cable, and electrical tape. The lighting is comprised of approx. 30’ of lamp wire and standard light fixtures. Bucky can be arranged in a number of ways, either hung in a line, each hung on the ceiling, mounted to a wall, draped over the floor, or all of the above. When lit, Bucky emits a deep contrast of light and dark, playing with light amidst its shadows, strong lines, and negative space. Bucky gets its name from the master of the geodesic dome from whom its cages received inspiration, Buckminster Fuller. [ more information ]
