Biography:
Olivia Gude is a Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Founding Director of Spiral Workshop. She has received many awards and commissions for her public artworkâcreating large-scale collaborative murals and mosaics. Olivia Gude is a Senior Artist of Chicago Public Art Group and is the editor of CPAGâs on-line Community Public Art Guide â www.cpag.net. Gude has published many articles and book chapters on art education and on community public art. Her current research focuses on identifying new paradigms for structuring visual art curriculum, including the articles, âPostmodern Principles: In Search of a 21st Century Art Educationâ and âPrinciples of Possiblity: Considerations for a 21st Century Art and Culture Curriculum.â The Spiral Art Education websiteâ spiral.aa.uic.edu â shares innovative projects for use in public school settings. Olivia Gude frequently presents lectures and workshops in university, school district, and museum settings, including at the The Ohio State University, Pennsylvania State University, University of British Columbia, California College of Arts, University of Texas Austin, the Los Angeles United School District, the Museum of Modern Art, Palm Springs Art Museum, the Walker Art Center, and Chicagoâs Art Institute and Museum of Contemporary Art. Gude has been the keynote speaker for art education conferences in Florida, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania as well as in Ontario and Manitoba, Canada.
In 2009, Gude was awarded the Viktor Lowenfeld Award by the National Art Education Association for her contributions to the field of art education.
