Biography:

Stephen Melamed is an industrial designer and design researcher with over 25 years of experience in consulting, corporate, and not-for-profit design environments bringing real world design experience into the classroom. His work focuses on the interaction of products and systems with their targeted end users. He initiated the Interdisciplinary Product Development curriculum at UIC with his colleagues from the Colleges of Engineering and Business. In addition to his position at UIC, he is a Principal at the product development consultancy, Tres Design Group.

Melamed received both his MFA and BFA from University of Illinois at Chicago in Industrial Design. His awards include The Silver Medal from IDEA (Sponsored by Business Week and IDSA); The Bronze Medal from IDEA; A Design & Innovation Award from CEA (Consumer Electronics Association); and a ‘Good Design’ Award from The Chicago Athenaeum Museum. He has been a guest lecturer at Columbia College (IL), IIT, Institute of Design (IL), Northwestern University (IL), Parsons (NY), Purdue University (IN), Pratt Institute (NY), The University of Notre Dame (IN), The University of Chicago (IL), Virginia Polytechnic University (VA), and Korea Design and Packaging Center in Seoul. Melamed has received grants from Whirlpool Corporation, Rehco, Copco (A Division of Wilton Industries), Pactiv Corporation, Motorola, Elkay Manufacturing Company, The R. Buckminster Fuller Foundation, and The National Endowment for the Arts & Humanities

Melamed’s work has been exhibited in The Pompideau Center in Paris, The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Design, and The Museum of Modern Art (NY). His work has been reviewed in The Chicago Sun-Times, ID Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Design Perspectives, Business Week, Architectural Digest, Product Design & Development, Home World Design, Appliance Manufacturer, and CE Times. Melamed is the co-inventor of over 50 U.S. and foreign patents.
